It is proposed to replace the steel door skins (out panels) of a particular model of car with composite skins made from 40% ramie fibers in a phenolic matrix. If all the fibers lie in the plane of the sheet and, on average, 50% of them contribute to stiffness and strength in any in-plane direction, what approximate in-plane modulus and strength could be expected? Use a simple rule of mixtures to calculate upper bounds for both. Data for ramie and phenolic can be found in Chapter 15.
