It is proposed to replace the low-carbon steel bumper set discussed in Case Study 8.10 in the text (the auto bumper) by one made of GFRP. It is anticipated that the GFRP set will weigh 9.5 kg. Following the procedure of the text, draw data from the data sheets of Chapter 15 to estimate whether, over the life pattern used in the text (250,000 km at 2.06 MJ/metric ton km), there is a net energy saving compared with steel and aluminum, each with 50% recycled content. Is one choice significantly better if the embodied energy data could be in error by 610%?
