Week 3: Explain how online news outlets, electronic media and social media have altered the traditional news cycle. Whereas corporate public relations practitioners once focused on providing the news media (newspapers, daily televised news broadcasts, radio reports) with once-a-day updates if needed, now web sites are constantly being updated. You will see when reading articles on the web that you are now shown the amount of time it has been since the site and article were updated! Explain how this has affected your intake for information. Do you feel you are now more 'aware' of the world around you? What do you consider to be a reasonable amount of time for a company to let the public know about a situation? Do you find yourself now expecting to have up-to-the-minute information at your fingertips? What about government efforts to embrace social media? How would you rate the public sector's social media efforts to share information more broadly? Week 4: Public relations is concerned with the court of public opinion. Therefore, how an organization acts during a crisis is important. Examine the Crisis Dos and Crisis Don'ts discussed in Chapter 17 and choose at least one from each list to explain in your initial post.  Then, research the actions of British Petroleum (BP) and its executives following the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Explain BP's public relations tactics to explain the spill and recovery efforts. What role did the media play in publicizing this crisis? How did other sources portray the situation in the Gulf? Think outside the box on this one, such as cartoons or billboards; how were the different sides of this situation presented via public relations practices?  For this assignment make sure you are not focusing specifically on the oil spill but rather on the public relations management of this crisis.
