The unit provides a comprehensive theoretical and practical foundation in career counselling. It enables students already familiar with counselling issues to understand the particular needs, issues, and concerns of adults in career identification and/or transition. This unit also contributes to an in-depth understanding of client assessment to meet the special and diverse needs of those intent on or forced to change, develop or extend their career aspirations. The unit addresses the important issues involved in the selection, use and interpretation of assessment instruments for career counselling. It looks at the use of technology in various career counselling settings, and finally provides career counsellors with a comprehensive list of resources, suppliers and references for career counselling materials. Textbook The textbook for this unit is: Niles, S. G., & Harris-Bowlsbey, J. (2017). Career development interventions (5th ed.). Boston, MA: Pearson Education. Studying for this unit The content of this unit has been designed to maximise the learning and the integration of the subject matter. Much of the unit material is specific to the Australian context. Students are encouraged to access additional information relevant to their local context, which will assist in applying the learning and ensuring its relevance. This may include specific legislation, government and professional association resources, and journals. It is important that students’ reading is broad. In general students are expected to: read each section of the unit carefully and make notes about new content, and points that are unclear, or in conflict with previous learning or experience complete readings of the text and other readings and resources, making notes on important insights or facts, especially those relevant to your assignments There may be periodic suggestions or issues on which students are asked to deliberate and reflect. Sometimes these are dilemmas or difficult issues associated with the study topic which have no right or wrong answers, but are used to trigger critical thinking. Face to Face hours by delivery mode: On Campus – OC: Units studied on campus are designed with 12 three hour classes, totalling 36 contact hours. Weekend Classes: Units offered as weekend classes must meet the required 36 contact hours. This is made up of 5 classes (9am-5pm) scheduled as per the unit timetable for the enrolled Trimester. Unit Outline: BESC2921 - Career Counselling and Assessment 3 Last updated: Trimester 1 2018 Blended Delivery - BD: Units offered in this mode of delivery require the student to attend: o Four synchronous sessions 1 ¾ hour synchronous sessions: 6.45 – 8.30pm o One two day workshop: 8.30-6pm Attendance requirements Attendance requirements ensure that students in PACFA-accredited courses meet their training requirements, and that learning outcomes are met. On Campus requirements (for students studying this unit on campus) In this unit provided by the School of Counselling, on-campus students are required to maintain at least 80% attendance. This means that students cannot miss more than three classes in a term. Blended Delivery requirements (for students studying this unit by Blended Delivery) Students are required to participate in 80% of all person to person learning overall (including workshops and synchronous webinars). Learning activities Learning activities are set in each section of the unit to give opportunities for further learning. They are designed to help students think through and practice the specific skills and general concepts presented in this unit. They do not need to be sent to the academic teacher for marking. However, valuable learning opportunities will be missed by not completing the activities. In studying this unit, students should maintain a learning journal for completing the activities. To structure the learning journal, set aside space for: completing a glossary of new terminology and concepts introduced in this unit notes on unit content and readings answers to learning activities draft assessments. Career counseling may refer to a wide range of professional activities that may help people to deal with career related problems and questions. Career counseling may be required by any adults who wants to start a career, people who want to change their job, children and their parents or anyone else. Career counseling can be given in different settings like one-to-one, i
n groups or through virtual communication depending upon the feasibility. An article by Lewis (2001) stated that there has been an increased requirement to integrate career counseling with personal counseling.
His study did a comparative analysis of both career counseling and personal counseling. His research also indicated that certain factors like emotional concern appeared rapidly in both types of counseling. It was also observed that the people were more satisfied and clear-headed when both issues of personal and career related problems were discussed. The study by Lewis was supposed to fill the gap in terms of literature when it comes to personal counseling and career counseling. A person with no emotional issues would be able to perform well in his career.
Overview of the interviewee’s career pathway and goals
This analysis is after the interview of a colleague who is studying Bachelor of Counselling and wants to become a career counselor. My colleague wants to finish her bachelor’s degree and then go on to pursue a master’s degree in career counselling. She thinks she is good at understanding people and can make them understand her point too. On asking why she wants to go for this profession and deal with so many confused students and parents, she gave satisfactory answers.
She said that she feels students connect with her well and people feel comfortable in talking to her and discussing their problems. This quality of hers can be explored if she becomes a counselor. My colleague understood the fact that the counselors are responsible for making the students confident academically as well as socially so that they can face the interviews.
My colleague had her goals set as she said she would do a master’s degree and along with that she would work part time in some senior career counselor’s office. This would help her to have both theoretical and practical knowledge. She would be able to learn from the experiences or students that her head would deal with. She was aware that most counselors need a degree and a certificate to practice as a counselor. Also, many or all people would want to know about their counselor’s own work experience and academic history, so they should be well prepared for that.
Another important aspect as discussed with my colleague for a career counselor would be to act or appear as a role model for the students. Overall, to become a good counselor, other than needing professional qualifications, speaking skills also hold much importance. My colleague said she is ready to give all what is required from her to achieve her goals in life and same she would be telling her clients.
A major theory of career development
Career Development is considered to be a continuous process that develops with the experiences of life and an individual is able to manage to identify his work identity. Career development theories are important as they provide a concept to work on and also describe when and how should the theories be implemented. The career development theories come from four different areas of study i.e. differential psychology, personality, sociology and developmental psychology.
Krumboltz (2009) had mentioned that the theory about career development cannot be considered as reality but as a way that we can think and apply to make better career related decisions.
