In this unit students will gain an understanding of the mental health system in Australia and the reforms that have contributed to the current mental health policy and service landscape. Students will become familiar with classification systems such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5 (DSM-5) and learn how to access information as required on particular mental health disorders. This unit will provide learning on the psychologically focused strategies that have been identified as effective for a range of mental health disorders. Through theoretical and practical learning students will critically evaluate national mental health policies, service delivery, prevention and early intervention programs. Self-awareness is a key aspect of learning in the field of mental health. Stigma and discrimination have been associated with mental illness therefore students will be invited to reflect on their own attitudes and beliefs related to mental health. Students will engage with mental health services to gain insight into consumer perspectives on experiences of mental illness and on treatment options. The emphasis of this unit is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to identify a client with a mental health problem, engage in minor assessment tasks and make appropriate referrals. mental illness in which patients show an on-going pattern of unstable moods and behaviours. It is characterized by diminished self-image and lack of trust of others. Patients are known to experience episodes of intense anger, depression, and anxiety that can last from just about few hours to several days.

Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms usually include-
Sudden mood swings
Uncertainty about self
Changing interests and values
Feeling at loss and empty
Inability to manage anger
Always doubtful of others
Extreme views, such as all good or all bad.
Unstable feelings leads to unstable relationships.
Self-harming behaviour, such as cutting, bruising, beating oneself
Recurring suicidal thoughts and behaviours

Evidence based treatment primarily comprise of psychotherapies. Many psychotherapies are used including-
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT): Therapist encourages, patients to realize negative or ineffective forms of thinking changing their perception gradually.
Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT): Relies on use of skills-based approach along with physical and meditative exercises to learn emotion regulation.
Schema-focused therapy (SFT): SFT focuses on changing the way patients see themselves.
Mentalization-based therapy (MBT): Talk therapy that is designed to help patients identify their own thoughts.
Transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP): Patient and therapist create an understanding and trusting relationship that helps patients to come into terms with their emotions.
Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS): Group therapy conducted by social workers as a supplement to other treatments.
Medications are not the primary treatment
Some medications in use may be Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), Second-generation antipsychotics and mood stabilizers, Omega-3's used mainly as supplements and anti-depressants.
