It is about creating home automation with Open source software called Home Automation. There are also a few short descriptions and it is not a written assignment.
Assignment 2 Option 2 – Home Automation IoT Innovation In this assignment you will be devising and implementing a home automation IoT innovation. You are tasked with coming up with “something innovative” using either a commercially available or do-it-yourself/open-source hardware, software and a home automation platform. The purpose of this assignment is to expose you to an open-source home automation platform and/or home automation IoT technologies using an authentic scenario. Assignment Tasks Your home automation IoT innovation project could be of one of the following forms: 1) Partially implementing your smart home plan from Assignment 1 using an open-source home automation platform (such as Home Assistant). To do this, you must make decisions that balance cost, quality, usability, platform interoperability and end-user experience. You will be using your own house as a case study and be looking to augment its existing systems to make it smart. Note that Assignment 2 should build upon Assignment 1, so you need to ensure consistency (where possible) between your design plan and your actual implementation. It is understood that it may not be realistic with budget constraints to fully implement your proposal from Assignment 1. Therefore, you can make decisions to set up “dummy sensors and devices” in order to mimic your plan (and where possible use any existing devices you may have). However, your implementation should be as real as possible and cover all of the technical concepts of home automation where cost is not a barrier to completing the assignment. 2) Choose from one (or more) facets of home automation (power, water, lighting, security and safety, HVAC, entertainment/autonomous appliances) and innovate around a particular aspect. For example, you may: • Create a custom IoT device that undertakes particular task as part of a home automation solution; • Devise a novel configuration of smart home devices to solve a complex task that has not been appropriately addressed by an off-the-shelf solution; • Contribute a novel integration, capability, technology or paradigm to an open-source home automation community; or • Adapt your 1711ICT project for use in a home automation scenario (provided there is sufficient complexity and expansion upon your original work), You should undertake independent research by viewing online tutorials, engaging with open- source home automation communities/forums and experimenting with your own ideas to realise your home automation IoT innovation. Whichever option above you select, you are encouraged to discuss your idea with the teaching staff no later than Week 6 and obtain approval to proceed. Upon completion, you will need to document your home automation IoT innovation project. This will primarily be in the form of a technical report that addresses: • The aim/purpose of your innovation. • Highlight the novelty of your innovation. • Describe the process/methodology for devising, constructing or implementing your innovation. • Demonstrate how your innovation functions in your chosen authentic context. • Outline any limitations or avenues for future work. Where relevant provide figures to illustrate your innovation (may include build instructions, demonstration, user interface), tables/graphs to summarise data or results, code (or significant code snippets), links to online repositories/video, and/or other evidence to show how you’ve contributed to the home automation community. In some cases, you may be asked by the teaching staff to provide a quick demonstration of your project (via Discord or Collaborate). Your report should be a professional document with a title page, table of contents, clearly defined sections, labelled figures/tables, and references to authoritative sources. The report must be at least 2,000 words and the project should be at a standard appropriate for a third-year course. Submission Instructions 1. Fill out the Griffith Assignment Cover Page. 2. Compile your report into a single Word document. 3. Name your Word file with the following convention: lastName_firstName_studentNumber.docx 4. Submit your assignment via the submission link on the course website.
