DIGITAL LITERACY Understanding Digital Media Your topic for this assignment should be based on the essays that you have written for this class. There are several different ways to get messages across to a reader – even within a written text. However, sometimes you may need to “add” visuals or provide a different genre for a different audience. For example: If you are writing about “College Athletes Should be Paid” in an essay – you could create a meme or video or book or brochure or Infographic or any number of things to get your message across to a different audience. To support your essay, you could create a table or graph to go IN your essay. Whatever Genre you decide on (video, graph, infographic, manual, cartoon, poster, brochure, meme, bumper sticker, flyer, word cloud, etc), your text should persuade the reader to do, think, or feel something. The guidelines are as follows: · You will create ONE (1) “item” – see exception to this rule below. Yes, you have to create this other genre item and you cannot copy/paste it from one already done. · Your text must present information in at least more than one mode (i.e. text and image, image and sound, text and sound) · Your text must be accompanied by a 1 page memo describing the choices you made; why you chose the modes you did, what your text compels a reader to do, think, or feel. Why did you choose the media that you did to deliver your information? What does your topic mean to you? How did your presentation modes represent something about your topic? What are your strengths? Your weaknesses? How does this relate to your overall thinking about language, literacy, and writing? · Your creation must be based around your theme that you chose for one of your essays for this class. · Your text does need to be digital (computer based) and you must simply work outside of essayistic prose. · If you decide to create MEME’s: · you must use a meme generator · you must include your initials in parenthesis IN THE TEXT · you must create 3 · If you decide to create bumper stickers or stickers · you must include your initials in parenthesis IN THE TEXT · you must create 3 Here are some ideas for you: for any of these or your own idea Google “free blah blah maker” · Bumper sticker (Google “free bumper sticker maker”) · Posters (Glogster is one) · Cartoons (toondo is one) · Fake facebook page, fake instagrams, fake emails . . . · Work Cloud (Wordle or Tagxedo are good ones) · Video (You Tube or Animoto (30 seconds for free) · Advertisements · Graphs, charts · Infographics (Canva, Piktochart are a couple of good ones - - do not pay for your design) · Fake magazines or magazine covers · Memes (meme generator, what people think I do meme generator, etc) · Online journals
