Reading helps in improving the memory. As a result, children perform their best at school and they are credited with high scores.
Strategies to be used by Students to improve their Reading Ability
Predicting Content
The most important strategy for reading is predicting the content. Predicting the content helps to get a better understanding of the text in reference. It allows the student to use the information of the text to anticipate what will happen. Predicting the content permits the students to use titles, heading and pictures in the given text. Active thinking is motivated by predicting content. The students can ask questions and take action towards clearing their doubt. It is deemed as a valuable strategy. Predictive improves comprehension in a student. Improved comprehension generates participation amongst the students by connecting with visual images (Foorman, Petscher and Herrera, 2018).
Reading for Gist
Gist implies the purpose of a text. The text may be in two forms, written or spoken. A student who is assigned to answer questions will refer to text, which is in a text format. Gist stands for General Interaction between Schemata and Texts. Gist a referred to as a summarisation of text. Digesting complex textual is made easy for a student by gist. Gist is a world learning technique. Gist is a compilation. It includes the important points and words, which a student comes across while reading. Gist is primarily done while reading or once a student has completed reading a particular portion of the text. Gist is required for the core purpose of understanding. The process gains access to students of the rigorous and complex texts (Wijekumar et al. 2020). Gist of a text is implemented by selecting a concrete and central text. The step is followed by highlighting the important portions in the text. The final step is noting down the highland portion in a notebook.
Signposting Language
Signposting language is used to guide a listener in understanding what is being said. Different words and phrases are used to signpost language. The strategy predicts what is going to happen in the future. Signposting is used when a student is listening to a lecture given by a Professor. The words and phrases, which are used for signposting, are termed as signposts. It gives clarity to a reader about the path, which the writing is following. The signposting strategy reminds the students of the key points in the given text. It also points out the changes in the writing pattern. Every text contains connection points within them. Signposting helps in understanding the connections. The connections in the text are clear to the students. Language signposting allows a student to interpret the information. For example, words like ‘notably’ and ‘significantly’ can be used at the beginning of a paragraph.
Reading for Detail
The most commonly used strategy for reading is reading for detail. Carefully reading is a slow reading process. The reading begins at the beginning of a passage. Subsequently, the process of reading reaches the end of the passage. Careful reading involves reading every sentence. The readers are advised to infer the meaning of each word as the student read. Reading for knowing the details should prevent exerting pressure on a student. The students should try to understand the meaning of each paragraph. Detail oriented reading is considered to be a valuable skill. Statistics says that detailed reading helps a student to understand 80% of the context (Nardo, 2017).
Skimming
