Investigate the local food movement in your own town or in a nearby town or city. What forms does it take? Is it a new phenomenon, or is it part of the way that people have already eaten there? (You may need to interview some older people to gather such information.) If there is little or no evidence for a local food movement where you live, try to discover why. If you find strong evidence of such a movement, what can you discover about its origins? About how it has changed? Write an essay in which you report your results. The essay may be primarily factual in nature, or it may be definitional, evaluative, or causal, or it may be a proposal. (For a discussion of these types of essays, see Chapters 8–12
