Interview a small group of middle-grade students to assess their understanding of reading–writing connections. Ask them questions, such as: How do you read? How do you write? What strategies do you use when you read? What strategies do you use when you write? Can you tell me how you connect your writing to your reading? What kinds of assignments help you connect reading and writing? Adapt your interview to encourage open-ended responses. Next, analysize the students’ responses and synthesize an understanding of your indings to share with your colleagues.
