Ethics and Corporate Citizenship: Wal-Mart

The corporation of Wal-Mart is a low cost retail organization and a multi-billion dollar company
having 6400 stores as well as sales associates of around 1.8 million all around the world. The
influence of Wal-Mart has been on the world of retail causing an enormity of the size of the
corporate to be unparalleled in nature. The reporting of Wal-Mart on sales can easily be of over
312.4 billion dollars per quarter of fiscal along with the profits of net of around 3.8 billion
dollars. A promise is made by Wal-Mart to the customers that prices offered will always be
lower than any place else and the investment offered to the stockholders is high. A way by which
Wal-Mart has been able to keep herself at the edge of the competition over all the retail giants
offering low costs is by cutting down the wages and also by not giving the benefits of the
company to the employees. The employees who work at Wal-Mart even those who work full
time, make only 8 dollars per hour and there are only 45 per cent of the employees can be
covered under the insurance of health. Part time employees at Wal-Mart are also increased up to
40 per cent from 20 per cent so that the health insurance cost for all the employees is not
required to be covered (Friedman, 2008).
From this perspective, it becomes evident that Wal-Mart by unethical means provides less
benefits to her employees but although Wal-Mart may not be offering benefits which are
excellent to the employees but the performance of the organization is successful through the
process of business operations in a legitimate way in the society which is capitalist. The primary
fiduciary duty of the Wal-Mart organization upholds a satisfaction for their stockholders
following a market liberalization model which is free stating that the processes of business
should not interfere with the market which is free. In a market which is free, there is a
responsibility which is direct towards the stockholders which are primary rather than the
company employees itself (Shaw and Vincent, 2008).
In accordance to Milton Friedman, a philosopher the primary social responsibility of the
corporate an all the organizations is that profit has to be increased towards the stockholders.
From the point of view of the perspectives in the utilitarian system, it is evident that Wal-Mart is
acting in a way that maximum benefit is achieved towards good over the stockholders

dissatisfaction. The fiduciary duty of Wal-Mart is upheld towards their stockholders by keeping
the employee’s wages lowered and they take up the money which they save by the reduction of
the wages of their employee’s and gives it to the stockholders as well as shareholders. From this
view, the organization makes happiness for all the people who are associated with the company
through investment. The consequences of all the actions are all what ethics is about and the
consequences of the actions of Wal-Mart lead it towards creating the amount of good which is
greatest for every individual who is the stockholder of the company (Freeman, 2010).
It can be argued that the pursuit of profits of Wal-Mart do not lead to the collection of good
which is greatest in the society because there are various owners who are involved in small
businesses and the employees of Wal-Mart can also declare a state of bankruptcy. This happens
because lower prices are preferred by the customers at Wal-Mart...
