Assignment Details

Pollutants can harm ecosystem function and may also harm human health.

You will write an APA-style research paper about pollutants, their impacts, and mitigation of harmful effects. Include the following:

  • Select 1 example of an environmental pollution from the following list:

    • Acid precipitation (acid rain)

    • Smog

    • Dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) pesticide use

    • Eutrophication

  • Answer the following questions about the pollution problem that you chose:

    • Describe the form of pollution chosen and the source of the pollutant(s). Include both natural and human sources, as applicable.

      • Is this from a point-source pollutant or nonpoint-source pollutant? Explain.

    • What are the harmful impacts of the pollution?

      • Describe impacts to both humans and to ecosystem structure and function.

    • What steps are in place to eliminate the pollutant or to mitigate harm from the pollutant?

      • Describe examples of laws or regulations that apply to the pollution and its sources.

      • Describe at least 1 educational program, technology, or other initiative that is used to help control the pollution.

    • Have the programs, best management practices, or regulations been effective in resolving harm from the pollutant?

      • Give examples of progress, or explain with examples what more could be done.

Utilize at least 1 credible source to support the arguments presented in the paper. Make sure you cite appropriately within your paper and list the reference(s) in APA format on your Reference page.

Your paper should be 2 pages minimum in length, not counting the Title page and Reference page. In accordance with APA formatting requirements, it should be double-spaced and include a running head and page numbers.

Acid Rain or Acid Precipitation— its Human and Natural Sources
Acid rain or Acid precipitation refers to a form of precipitation that is constituted of acidic components in wet form or dry form. The acidic components normally include sulfuric acid and nitric acid. Rain, snow, fog, dew and sleet are the wet forms of acid rain, whereas, acidified particles make up the dry parts (Tiwari et al., 2016).
Acid rain occurs when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides liberated into atmosphere from man-made polluting sources like industrial wastes, vehicle exhausts, burning of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, react with oxygen, water and other solutes, chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids respectively (Rao et al., 2016). Besides the artificial sources, natural sources like dust and gases from erupting volcanoes could also contribute to acid rain.
Acid rain is from a non-point or diffused source pollutant. There is no defined source for acid rain. Moreover, as stated by Canter (2018), the wind could blow the harmful chemicals involved in acid precipitation far and wide affecting a large area. Acid rain not only pollutes the air quality but also the rainwater, subsequently percolating to the ground water and polluting agricultural fields through surface run-off.
