Acid Rain or Acid Precipitation— its Human and Natural Sources
Acid rain or Acid precipitation refers to a form of precipitation that is constituted of acidic components in wet form or dry form. The acidic components normally include sulfuric acid and nitric acid. Rain, snow, fog, dew and sleet are the wet forms of acid rain, whereas, acidified particles make up the dry parts (Tiwari et al., 2016).
Acid rain occurs when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides liberated into atmosphere from man-made polluting sources like industrial wastes, vehicle exhausts, burning of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, react with oxygen, water and other solutes, chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids respectively (Rao et al., 2016). Besides the artificial sources, natural sources like dust and gases from erupting volcanoes could also contribute to acid rain.
Acid rain is from a non-point or diffused source pollutant. There is no defined source for acid rain. Moreover, as stated by Canter (2018), the wind could blow the harmful chemicals involved in acid precipitation far and wide affecting a large area. Acid rain not only pollutes the air quality but also the rainwater, subsequently percolating to the ground water and polluting agricultural fields through surface run-off.
