This assignment will test what you have learned during this entire course, with special emphasis on Module IV, Quantitative Research.

Please read the following peer-reviewed research article: De Maio, Fernando, David Ansell and Raj C. Shah. 2020 Racial/ethnic minority segregation and low birth weight in five North American cities.Ethnicity & Health25(7), 915-924. Available electronically from the York University Library.

Assume you are a policy analyst at Ontario’s Ministry of Health. Your boss gives you a copy of this article and after noting you have just taken PPAL 6200, asks you if it is any good and what actions, if any, are warranted? To answer her questions, you will write her a report that reviews and analyzes this article (maximum length 8 pages typewritten, double-spaced, 12 point font, including all notes and references). Your fictional boss is actually an academic taking a leave of absence from her real job as a university professor to do some “public service”, so she expects a report such as this to be properly supported with citations and references.

Assignment note (tip):

This is your chance to show what you learned this term. A one page, “I think this is great because…and we should make sure we address this” OR “I think this is horrible because…and we can totally ignore this” sort of product will not take full advantage of the opportunity, and consequently, won’t score very well.

Introduction
    Racial segreg
ation is one of the major issues that affect the policy making structure in United States. In fact, there are several associated links to understand why racial distinction and ethnic segregation takes place in society which consequently gives way to the multiple healthcare issues. One of the major problems, as presented in the study of Maio, Ansell and Shah (2018), is related to low weight of infants at the time of birth which is due to the racial segregation. As a result of this segregation, the proper accessibility of the healthcare norms and quality of care does not approach the minorities living in a particular area. The comparative study of Chicago and Toronto along with three other major cities presents significant concerns which need to be addressed at the level of policymaking.
Brief Overview of the Issue
At first, it is significant to understand why and how racial segregation happens in society which leads to several healthcare issues in the communities that have to go through the community based biases. There is a close hint which the study provides in the introductory section about it. Racial segregation is more like an orthodox approach which seems to be obsolete and outdated but still, somewhere in the roots of the social values, it exists and it is strong enough to affect the mindset of the majority. Segregation should be understood as the process through which, specific racial group or community is targeted with regard to develop the feeling of depreciation. They are not given the opportunities to become the part of the mainstream society and are forced to remain on the margins i.e. they have to coexist with the influential groups in terms of holding the majority in society.
Additionally put, not only the racial segregation provides negative social impacts, but also it affects the reach of the clinical services to the marginalized communities. he observations made in the article indicate towards some of the clinical factors responsible for the low birth weight in the selected population of Chicago and Toronto and three other major cities of United States. What makes this situation become complex is the approach with which, the racial biases emerge and affect the course of the quality of care. It is implied by the analysis presented in the article that the on policymaking grounds, it is important to focus on some of the conventional issues which need formal addressing to avoid such negative issues as per the proper healthcare accessibility.
Additionally, the social determinants are largely responsible for the association of low birth weight in the selected communities. The researchers have focused on mainly two factors which are the ratio of unemployment and the specific ‘fear’ of disclosing their weakness to the communities at other level. In other words, the lack of awareness leads to the problematic issues to arise rapidly in the communities which are marginalized and at the same time, it is more like the vulnerability of the population to the several issues related to the low birth weight which are no addressed in broad social perspectives.
