REFLECTIVE ANALYSIS OF JOSEPH CAMPBELL’S STAGES
Joseph Campbell is the person who created the hero’s journey and laid it out in excruciating detail in his book, the Hero with a Thousand Faces. Campbell makes the argument that mythology comes from a common place in our unconscious minds and that we all share a common perspective with respect to ourselves in the real world. His message is inspiring. (As Noted by Allen, L. And Edwards 2018) Mythological and religious hero stories of “saving the world,” can be applied in our own lives. This is the point of myths, heroic stories, and the messages and metaphors of religions: To be realizing within ourselves and evoked in our own lives. Joseph discusses how many myths and religions share the same messages, some have different ways of explaining them, with different characters, and different forms. Within these messages are lessons of love, courage, forgiveness, redemption, awakening, enlightenment, and inner peace. The point of a story is to show change and progress in a protagonist. He/she/it starts in a pretty crappy situation. A boring and uncomfortable life. (As Noted by Bronzite 2018)Something happens to disrupt their world, they have an adventure, find themselves in worse/dangerous situations, change who they are and end up in a much better place than when they started. It is something that speaks directly to the heart, the idea that if we have the courage to change, we too can make things better for ourselves. The “monomyth” is the story of everyman: a challenge to change, a refusal to leave status quo, significant meetings with teachers of all kinds. (As Noted by Ross 2019)A journey or quest into another realm, the unknown realm, obstacles, challenges and enemies to confront, most of them within one’s own self and about challenges to old understanding and circumscribed world view. An ordeal that one may either rise to deal with or retreat, a journey back to one’s old life with resignation or with a prize/understanding/wisdom with which they then spearhead change for themselves and the rest of the world.
