Introduction
North American free-trade agreement is an economic treaty between Canada Mexico and the United States that removes most of the tariffs between the countries. NAFTA was the world's largest economic agreement that focuses on free trade between the countries of the United States Canada and Mexico in North America. It was established in the year 1994 on 1st January. The most spectacular feature of this trade agreement was that this is the first trade agreement that involved two developed nations of the world Canada and the US. The three signatories of NAFTA agreed to remove every sort of trade barrier among them and increased investment and business opportunities. This resulted in a significant interrelation between North America and Middle America.
History of NAFTA
The main purpose of this trade agreement was to make North America competitive in the global marketplace. It specifically focused to reduce the trading cost and increase business investment. In 1980 President Ronald Reagan proposed a common North American market for the first time in his presidential campaign. This was a dubbing version of the European Economic Community which was initiated by the Treaty of Rome in 1957. Thereafter in 1984, Congress initiated the Trade and Tariff Act to negotiate bilateral free trade agreements among the North American nations. Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney agreed to initiate a discussion on free trade agreement within North America. Thereby, in 1986 Canada- US free trade agreement was negotiated between the USA and Canada. After four years in 1990 US President George HW Bush initiated a discussion with President Salinas of Mexico and Prime Minister Brian Mulroney of Canada for a liberalized trade agreement. It was signed by the heads of the three countries in 1992 which came to be known as the North American free trade agreement. Later, after being ratified by the legislatures of these three countries and finally signed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, it took effect on 1st January 1994.
Middle America and North America Relations
If we typically observe the geography of North America and Middle America it is evident that Canada and the USA fall in the North American Realm. While middle America is defined as the area between North and South America. Mexico is the prominent Middle American Realm which has a strong cultural and historical similarity with that of Central America. Middle American Realm consists of three main regions; the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central American Republics (Douglas, Haarmann & Johnson).
Mexico is the largest country in Middle America and has a profound impact on the Middle American realm. It has an extensive land border with the United States to the north. Therefore, the signing of the North American free-trade agreement between Mexico, Canada, and the USA established an investment relationship between the North American realm and the Middle American realm. This resulted in several economic interrelations that made Mexico the third-largest trading partner of the US. In 2019 Mexico becomes the second-largest source of US imports and exports too. Studies and research confirm that the net economic effects of NAFTA which came into force in 1994 have a...
