Assignment: NETWORKING PLAN INSTRUCTIONS Purpose: This networking plan should help you begin to formally develop a professional network, as well as to track your progress. Criteria: Your networking plan should include the professional organizations you plan to join and how you plan to get involved with them. It should include an "elevator speech." An elevator speech is a 30 second to one minute description of who you are and what you do. The idea is that, if you get into an elevator and meet someone new, you have until one of you gets off on your floor to tell the other person about yourself, and/or to ask about him or her. It could have an outline of a similar but longer discussion of you meet someone at an event and have time to chat - what are some things you'd like them to know about you and what you do and, even more importantly, a list of questions you could ask them to get to know them and what you might be able to do for them. A networking plan might describe a timetable of how often you'd like to stay in contact with people. You may want to meet monthly with certain close colleagues. Perhaps quarterly with others. And an email or call once a year might be adequate for other connections. Finally, a networking plan can be as detailed as listing out those you consider part of your professional network, with dates of when you last made contact, of when you'd like to again make contact, and notes about the person to help you remember stuff about him or her.
