In a culture that values equality, and that believes all humans can reach their full potential, if they work hard and never give up - a unit on social stratification can be particularly challenging to our existing worldview. After all - discrimination is illegal, right? After all, the U.S. is the land of possibility, right?  The readings and videos for this week bring attention to issues of social inequality (i.e. inequality that is the outcome of social design, not individual failure) and social identities, both of which shape our experiences in society and with one another. For this discussion, let's focus on the stories we've learned growing up, and how those stories may be changing as we grow older and learn more about the world. You'll need to have watched the videos posted to the module, as well as reviewed the chapters. Complete each prompt. DISCUSSION - Answer Each Section (Personal Reflection/Connection to the Video/Connection to the Readings): 1. Personal Reflection: What connections can you make between the messages in the videos, readings and contemporary society, and/or your own upbringing? To help you reflect, consider: · What stories did you learn about the topics of poverty, wealth, gender, sexuality race, ethnicity and prejudice/discrimination growing up? Is it something that was openly discussed in your home? Or did you learn about in school?  · When did you first become aware of the ideas of wealth? poverty? gender? race? Was it something that happened to you, or an experience that happened to someone you know? Was it something you came across on television or in a movie?  2. Connection to the Videos: · (Video) Adiche makes the point that the single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete.” What do you think of that statement? In what way(s) does Adiche expand your worldview on stereotypes? What are some single stories you learned growing up about the poor? the rich? boys/men? girls/women?  · (Video) According to Kilbourne, in what ways do magazine ads socialize people into ideas about gender? Why are these ads "dangerous"? Can you think of other social identities/groups that may be harmed by dangerous ads?  3. Connection to the Readings:  · Choose ONE racial or ethnic group from Outcome: Race and Ethnicity in the U.S..  Summarize the story of that group, from how the group came to the U.S.,  their history of intergroup relations and their current status. Does this information challenge or support the story you've heard about this group, growing up?  · What is gender socialization? According to the chapter, how are boys and girls socialized into gender? It is easier to see examples of gender role socialization in children than it is in adults. Think of some examples of how adults are socialized into gender roles over the life course. What does society expect of people based on gender at different ages?

Personal Reflection:
Ans 1. The tales I heard as a youngster on the subjects of poverty, wealth, gender, sex
uality, race, ethnicity, and prejudice/discrimination all had to do with the difficulties faced by the poor, such as a shortage of food, inadequate schooling for children, and the need of starting work at a young age. The ways in which racial prejudice causes stratification in society, with the privileged group ignoring or even avoiding the less fortunate. Similar to how men were favored over women and how far women still have to go to achieve parity. My family and I often had discussions on these topics at both our public and private schools, where we learned valuable lessons from real life and were exposed to all sides of the debate.
Ans 2. One of my childhood friends had a hard time getting into a decent school because of her low family income and the color of her skin, and that's when I was first exposed to the concepts of social class, gender, race, and sexual orientation. What role they play, beyond her IQ, in her success in school and in her life overall. In that moment, I...
