Instructions: A fully completed response should include a discussion of the artistic, cultural, political, social, and or general environmental circumstances. Use at least three specific examples of artists and art works we have seen in class in your discussion (three examples total for the entire question). Please respond to the entire question, not just individual parts of the question. You should be aiming for at least two typed, double-spaced pages. If you go beyond two pages, that means you have a lot to say, which is fantastic! If you complete the Extra Credit, it does not count towards your two pages.
Many of the artists we have studied in the second half of this class created art as a response to religious, political, and or cultural issues in society, while others were more intrigued with the idea of experimenting with different artistic techniques, almost in defiance of the more socially and politically inspired artists around them. Using examples of three artists, discuss how these differing philosophies worked together to make great strides in the development of art. (60 points possible)
Requirements from the students:
For the 3 artists and their artwork can you talk about;
George Seurat: A sunday on la grande jatte (Post impressionism)
Picasso: The Accordionist (Cubism)
Henri Matisse: Women with the hat (Fauvism)
