Instructions for Short Story Paragraphs
Please write one or two paragraph answers to each of the following three questions. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence (a main statement on the topic of the paragraph). Provide middle sentences with detail and discussion, using select quotes (two maximum per paragraph) from the stories. End your paragraphs with concluding sentences offering reflection on your topic. Aim for 150-200 words per paragraph. Figuring out your approach to the question is an important piece of the assignment.
Both “Borders” by Thomas King and “One’s a Heifer” by Sinclair Ross feature journeys. Examine these two journeys in terms of goals, obstacles, achievements, and learning.
Discuss the sibling relationships in “The Summer the Neighbours were Nazis” by Kate Cayley and “Tricks” by Alice Munro.
In both “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “Tricks” by Alice Munro, the central characters gain sudden insight in a misunderstanding. Note the effects of these discoveries on the characters themselves.
Paragraphs will be graded on Content (your ideas and discussion), Structure (your clear use of topic sentence, detailed middle sentences, and concluding sentence, and Style (your thoughtful word choice and clear grammar and punctuation).
