Human nature and identity crisis in “Oedipus, the King”
Human beings have a natural will to discover truth, both about themselves as well as the world. In their quest to seek truth and self-realization, human beings venture and take up adventure that result in unexpected events. These events may be positive or negative, however, they are a result of man’s quest for self-identity and self-realization. Sophocles represents this fact in his tragedy, “Oedipus, the King”, where Oedipus, a king, meets his fate in an unexpected manner, even against his will.
In the story, Oedipus is prophesized to have a tragic life, whereof, he would kill his father and marry his mother. In order to flee from this destiny, Oedipus takes up matters in his own hand and decides to change his fate without indulging consciously in...
