Introduction
Refugee health, the Yazidi refugees in Toowoomba, Australia is not a mere simple problem of dire health needs; rather a social, economical, and even cultural problem. Refugees experien
ce challenges to health care because of trauma in their home countries, poverty and ignorance on health care services. United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 3, targets effective promotion of healthy lives and well-being of all the people including refugees. This assessment examines the social determinants of health affecting the Yazidi community and discusses the changing responsibilities of the nurses in serving their numerous health requirements, coupled with the involving of the key stakeholders and culturally appropriate care approaches.
Part A: Identifying and Describing the Community
The Yazidis are a Kurdish–speaking endemic nationality inhabiting in the north of Iraq, and with a diaspora in Syria, Turkey, and Iran. Sheeja for practising a different religion, the Yazidis became a victim of ISIS during the 2014 genocide and had to flee from their homes, suffered physical and emotional abuse, and witnessed horrific incidents. Most Yazidis escaped from their country and migrated to Australia where some were relocated to Toowoomba in Queensland.
In Toowoomba, like in many other places in the word the Yazidis have numerous challenges as they seek to establish themselves. They have suffered physical and psychological consequences due to past experiences, and because they cannot adapt to the new culture. Lack of education, brining issues, as well as being economisly unstable also worsens the immagration of these people into the Australian socity (Magwood et al., 2022). In addition, a large part of the time, getting adequate care can be very difficult because of the cultural gap, the lack of trust in the proper medical systems and institutions, and low levels of health literacy. To understand their need that they have to share for obtaining the health care facilities, this community needs to be identified properly.
Part B: Social Determinants of Health
From the position of the Yazidi refugees living in Toowoomba, Australia, more than one aspect of the social determinants model threatens their health. These include;; economic stability, education/health literacy/ trauma & mental health. All these determinants have a key contribution of affecting the health of this vulnerable population in terms of both physical and mental wellbeing. The following field analysis explains how these three fundamental determinants influence the Yazidi refugees:
1. Economic Stability
Stability in the economy of a given country is one of the main social factors in the health needs of human beings in general and the Yazidi refugees in particular. Having lived in refugee camps for many years, most Yazidi refugees are ill-equipped to adjust to a new society back in Australia, and many struggle with economic employment opportunities, lack of certifications/training, or unfamiliarity with Most refugees arrive with low literacy levels or lack skills relevant to the Australia job market and are thus jobless or underemployed. These economic disadvantages therefore make them financially vulnerable that they cannot afford basic needs like shelter, proper diet and medical care.
The person also ends up not having steady employment, which makes them food insecure hence resulting in malnutrition, or poor diets that increase the risk of developing diabetes obesity, and heart diseases among others. In addition, financial constraints are a challenge to Yazidi families as they may be unable to afford quality health care; private health care to be specific may not be fully supported by Medicare or other forms of support systems. Most Yazidis may delay to seek care because of costs that may arise, hence worsening their health complications.
2. Education and Health Literacy
One unique factor determining the conditions of Yazidi refugees is education and health literacy. A good number of Yazidis especially elder ones are illiterate due to the many years hence that 數 they experienced persecution and conflicts that disrupted their education. Therefore, millions of people can hardly read which is essential in following treatment procedures for chronic illnesses or other illnesses that require compliance to certain lifestyles or diets.
Understanding of the patient’s health also affects him/her when he/she has little health literacy especially when seeking care in a new country. Yazidi refugees may have difficulty interpreting the Australian...
