Good Day to You!
With this week discussion post, I am very excited to share my analysis on Victor Lavalle’s Destroyer and focusing on the underlying theme of graphic novel. Well, this novel transport the reader to the world where Victor Frankenstein is alive and all his creatures are real. After surviving living under the harsh external environment of Antarctica he wants to avenge the death of several ocean creatures because of human development. Hence, he builds an avatar whose ultimate goal was to eliminate humanity from Earth. There are strong themes emerging from this graphic novel that essentially include racism, misogyny and brutality by police. LaValle beautifully weaves the entire tale of modern-day story of United States of America. This is further intensified because of adding history of original Frankenstein story like hatred and fear which resonates a lot with larger audience.
However, the story is multi-layered and many facets comes into play as Destroyer isn’t just another creature of Frankenstein that is looking for revenge. At the core of the character is poignant story that add different dimension to Destroyer. One of the descendants of the Frankenstein family as well as Akai, who was her resurrected son.
