Annotated Bibliography
Article 1
Sagar, R., & Gupta, T. (2018). Psychological aspects of obesity in children and adolescents. The Indian Journal of Pediatrics, 85(7), 554-559
Introduction
As mentioned by the above article, obesity has remained a common psychological problem in between the children as well as adolescence group. Childhood obesity is multi-factorial health condition, which not only affect the physical health but also affect the child psychologically. As mentioned by Sagar and Gupta (2018), there are several literature evidence regarding the physical effect of obesity, but recently, evidences are pointing towards the mental health of the obese children whose experiences are worsening day by day due to their poor health structure. Co-morbid psychosocial as well as the emotional problems of obesity generally act as causal or maintaining factors of obesity and thus significantly affect the treatment outcome in this regard.
Methods
In term of methodology, the article uses the cross-sectional study design, case control and prospective studies in order to increase the body mass index as well as the psychopathology. In order to understand the psychological problems in the children and the adolescents, researchers used several assessment tools which include, childhood behavioral checklists, development psychopathy checklist, body shape questionnaires, pediatric quality of life scales, Stroop color word test and many more. Through the utilization of the assessment tools, it has been observed that application of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques could help to measure the mental status of the child and accordingly can proceed for treatment.
Research
This chosen article provides certain evidences that are based on comprehensive over view of both the psychological as well as psychiatric factors, which relates depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, stress, body shape, eating disorders and many more that are associated with the childhood obesity that can further be utilized in the evaluation as well as the management of this obesity epidemic. Apart from this, the article also highlighted the role of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for management of the obesity especially in the children as well as in the adolescent. The article further deals with potential strategies to overcome the barriers.
Results
As per the article, it has been stated that now the fatty and overweight child are suffering from frustration and anxiety as they are often becoming the target of harassment not only in the public places but also harassed by their nearest and dearest ones. As an outcome, these children face low self-esteem and poor confidence level in facing any challenges as well as difficult challenges. Findings and result in this regard would vary in terms of population being studied. Clinical sample of obese children consistently reported more behavioral problems, which are at higher risk of developing psychopathology compared to nonclinical population.
Discussion
It is also acknowledged from the study that not all obese children experience the same psychological problems. Some specific groups such as the adolescent females clinically approved obese group and children with severe and chronic obesity were found to be at risk of developing co-morbid psychiatric as well as psychological problems.
Analytical Feedback
From the above-mentioned article, I personally gained huge knowledge as well as learned that child obesity has a great threat not only to the physical health but also to the mental health of the child as well as the adolescent. Hence, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques such as problem solving, stimulus control as well as self-monitoring could help to manage the childhood obesity.
