In this assignment, you will compare news accounts of a current event of your choice using summary and analysis skills. Your assignment should be two to three pages in length and formatted according to APA guidelines.


STEP 1: SELECT A CURRENT EVENT TOPIC.


Consider contemporary debatable news topics. Some ideas for exploration include tariffs, border politics, Brexit, role of the UN, digital hacking, populist politics, emergent technologies, and labor practices.


STEP 2: RESEARCH AND SELECT TWO REPRESENTATIONS OF THE CURRENT EVENT IN THE NEWS MEDIA.


One representation should be from a credible source. The second should be from a source that may include potential biases.


STEP 3: SUMMARIZE YOUR SELECTED ARTICLES.


For each article, provide a three-paragraph summary of the key points, main examples, and reasoning. The goal is to provide objective summaries that relay the information of the articles. Resist the urge to give into your own biases! Remember to clearly label each summary and remember to include an APA citation for each reference.


STEP 4: WRITE A COMPARE AND CONTRAST ANALYSIS.


Provide a two- to three- page compare and contrast analysis that evaluates the credibility, validity, timeliness, and biases of the articles. Remember to consider the tools in information literacy that you read about in the Week 2 Lesson to help shape your response.

The article selected is “Brexit: Your simple guide to the UK leaving the EU” published in BBC News (2019). This article summarises the Brexit and provides the information about after effects of the Brexit. The article stated that Brexit is British Exit. This term was given when United Kingdom has chosen to leave the European Union. The United Kingdom joined the European Union in 1973. A public vote had been taken, which is known as referendum. This referendum was held on 23 June 2016 when voter was asked whether United Kingdom should leave or remain part of the European Union and exit occur in March 2019.
After 2016 vote, negotiation between UK and European Union conducted under the deal known as Withdrawal agreement. The withdrawal agreement states that United Kingdom needs to pay 39 billion Euros to European Union for breaking of contract. It provides the information about the citizen of UK living in EU and vice versa. It also has information about return of a physical border between Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. This agreement provides the information about transition period, during which UK and EU to agree to trade deal and give businesses time to adjust.
There is political declaration, which provides the overview of UK and EU’s future relationship for the longer term. The article of BBC News (2019) stated that MPs do not backed the withdrawal agreement. They rejected the deal by record defeat of 432 votes to 202. Both UK and EU backed the decision of backstop, which is acts as a safety net at the Irish Border. The backstop is a resort to keep the borders open on the Ireland whatever Brexit negotiations.
