Exploring EJAtlas - Global Atlas of Environmental Justice [20 points]

The websiteejatlas.org(Links to an external site.)is a global database of environmental justice conflicts. Spend a little bit of time exploring the website. Double click on the map to zoom un to a specific area.

Pick a conflict in the United States that interests you, read the complete entry on the conflict, and consult some of the linked resources. (Note that entries vary in how much information is provided and it will be easier to pick an entry that has more information.) Answer the following questions:

1. What was the name of the conflict and the weblink for the EJAtlas entry? [2 points]

Exploring the EPA’s EJSCREEN tool [20 points]

EJSCREEN is an online tool developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. It is designed to be used by residents of the U.S. to investigate exposure to unhealthful toxins in their communities. The tool is relatively user friendly, but if you are having trouble, consult theuser guide(Links to an external site.).

Go tohttps://ejscreen.epa.gov/mapper/(Links to an external site.)to launch the tool. Click “Add Maps” from the top bar and select “Side-by-side maps.” You will be creating a side by side map of the surrounding area ofWaukegan, Illinoiswhere the map on theleft shows an environmental hazard or risk, and the map on the
right shows demographic information(e.g., minority population, income level, etc.). use the legend to understand what the shading means.

You will then answer questions regarding the environmental injustice of this area.

1. Create a side-by-side map of Waukegan, Illinois. Waukegan, IL is on the western coast of Lake Michigan. Zoom out enough so that your map view captures the cities of Lake Bluff to the south and Waukegan to the north. For each map, click on “Map Data,” select “EJSCREEN Maps” under the map theme, select “Compare to State”, and then can select ”NATA Cancer Risk” as the environmental indicator under “Category” for the left map and “Demographic Index” as the demographic indicator under “Category” for the right map. Make sure to click “Legend” for both maps so you can see what the colors represent. Print your screen (you can use the PrtSc button on a PC or command+shift+4 on a Mac) and copy the map comparison into your assignment document (like example above). [5 points]


2. Describe and explain the side-by-side maps of cancer risk and the demographic index. You should explain both of these indicators and describe any correlations that you see. Who is being disproportionately affected by this?
