words +/- 10%) What do we need to do? This part of the second assessment is worth 30 marks (each group member will receive the same mark for the assignment) and builds upon the Annotated Bibliography assessment. In this assignment you will apply your research to your case study patient and then write and format a Case Report as if it were to be submitted for publication in a nursing (nursing students) or paramedicine (paramedicine students) journal for publication. From your annotated bibliographies, your group should now have at least 12 different starter articles that you can use for this second assignment (these are just your starter articles – you will need to source more for your case report). You’ll need to include the following sections in your Case Report: Title. Your title should be interesting, succinct, and precise. It should clearly outline the main issue you are presenting in your report and make it clear to your reader that the article you have written discusses only one patient (i.e., you are writing a case report). Have a look at some of the titles for other case reports in the case report journals I have provided below. The title of your case report should NOT have the words “assignment” or “NURS3001 Case Study” etc. in it (or any other reference to this being an assignment for a unit), as this would not be appropriate for submission to a journal. If a journal reader were to only look at your title, they should be able to get an overall idea what the paper is about. Abstract. This is a summary of your paper. It should contain no more than 250 words and be written last. This section does NOT contribute to your word count. The abstract is important because many journal readers first read the abstract to determine if the entire article is worth reading. The abstract should describe all four parts of your case report (i.e., Introduction and Literature Review, Case Presentation, Discussion, and Conclusions – particularly these last sections as this is what journal readers would be most interested in) so think how you might write one or two sentences summarizing each section of your paper. Introduction and Literature Review (this section does NOT have a heading – see the sample APA formatted paper on Blackboard for formatting requirements). The introduction section starts with a paragraph giving a brief overview of the main problems, errors, and/or management issues you are discussing in the case report. For example, give a 1 or 2 sentence description of the patient and then outline why this case is worth discussing (i.e., what was the main interesting issue/error/problem with the case). This section of your paper should then contain several more paragraphs providing a review of the literature that critically discusses general common behavioural and psychological responses of patients and families to having the illness you have been researching. Do not discuss the patient in this literature review section (but mention them in your introduction paragraph). Use and discuss the literature you located for your annotated bibliographies and any other literature you’ve located. Why do patients with this illness have these sorts of responses to having the illness and what are these responses caused by? If you decide you now don’t want to include some of the articles you used for the Annotated Bibliography in the Case Report then it is ok to leave them out. You may also refer to literature you didn’t discuss in your Annotated Bibliographies (e.g., general literature reviews etc.) but remember that it should be written as if you were going to submit it to a journal so you will need to exercise your judgement regarding the sort of literature that would be acceptable and credible. The suggested word count for this section is approximately 700 words. You will need a transition or linking sentence between this section and the next. NURS3001 Sem 1 2016 – Assignment 2b Case Report 2 Case Presentation (please see the sample APA formatted paper for formatting requirements of this section). Provide a narrative description of the case study patient and their family using the information given in all of the case notes you have for the patient. Give information about the patient’s/family’s presentation pre-, peri-, and post- hospitalisation. The suggested word count for this section is approximately 250 words. You will need a transition or linking sentence between this section and the next. Discussion (please see the sample APA formatted paper for formatting requirements of this section). Explain the behavioural and psychological responses identified in the patient/family to their illness in relation to the literature presented in your introduction and literature review section. In order to do this effectively, you’ll need to critically analyse and evaluate your literature, the concepts discussed in the unit, and compare and contrast these to your patient/family. Also, consider external (e.g., social and physical environmental) factors – NOT just the internal causes such as the illness, biology, or personality etc. In this section, also discuss how the nursing/paramedic care management issues contributed to the patient/family’s behavioural and psychological responses and how they affect the patient’s outcome. The suggested word count for this section is approximately 750 words. You will need a transition or linking sentence between this section and the next. Conclusions and Recommendations (please see the sample APA formatted paper for formatting requirements of this section). Make specific recommendations for how other nurses or paramedics might prevent the mistakes made in this case and suggest things that could be put in place to avoid the care management issues you’ve identified in this case. What things should have been done differently? For the nursing students, this might relate to ward activity/procedures (e.g., how might other nurses modify their hospital environment to ensure the problems/errors/management issues don’t happen again with other patients etc.) but also includes systemic change you would recommend the hospital or health care system do in the future, such as policy or duty statement modifications. For the paramedic students, this might include how the patient’s presentation could have been better managed during transport, how you might modify the ambulance environment to better accommodate other similar patient needs in the future, or how policies, clinical guidelines, and procedures could be put into place to ensure better communication between team members etc. We don’t want a page of suggestions outsourcing your recommendations to other health professionals (e.g. psychologists). Focus on what nurses and paramedics are able to do for patients and their families and how nurses and paramedics would lead any change management process. Additionally, we would MUCH prefer fewer suggestions and recommendations discussed in more detail rather than lists of lots of superficial recommendations. For example, it is not enough to simply write “Provide education to the ward nurses/paramedics”. You need to be specific here – what sort of education, when, where, how, who, why etc. This section should NOT read like a care plan for the patient – the idea is to make suggestions and recommendations that other nurses and paramedics (and other key stakeholders such as managers or policy makers etc.) reading your paper could put in place in their own workplaces to prevent similar issues occurring to their patients in future. The suggested word count for this section is approximately 800 words. References. Reference list formatted as per APA (6th ed.) manual guidelines.
