Difference between Perceived and Tested Result Based Understanding of Leadership Qualities
Prior to the conduction of the emotional intelligence test (EI) I considered myself as an emotional leader, who was driven towards the welfare of the employees of whom, responsibility I was allocated with. I thought, as a manager, I lacked the element of experience and therefore, I focused on catering knowledge and used my self-learning tendencies to the benefit. As I manager I lacked the ability of controlling my own emotions and it was clear that my work got affected by personal life. As affirmed by Kark, Van Dijk and Vashdi (2018), as a manager always focused on organizational goals but performed my tasks in non-conventional ways, which included use of humor for self, developing unofficial bond with the employees and use the personal attachment for the task completions.
I also felt that I have the ability to persuade my employees although I feel a bit tensed under pressure situations, as I had to concentrate intensely to focus. I felt that although I lack control of my own self during emotional upheaval, I have sound relationship management skills, ample social awareness and self-awareness, making me a potential leader in organizations. However, I also expected that I was not good in self-management and it is one area, where I should improve a lot.
After the emotional intelligence test results collected from the authentic website of Global Leadership Foundation, I noticed that my assumptions were most right. I found that I have impressive relationship management, social awareness skills, along with good awareness of self. I score 7 out of 10 in all three categories. However, I was surprised to see that my self-management score was very low. I found that I only scored 2 out of ten, which was alarming.
