I want you to imagine that you are a senior doctor in the hospital. For many years you have been treating this patient named Liliana. Lilian is suffering terribly from arthritis, and she is a palliative care patient, someone who is never going to get better. And no one is trying to relieve her symptoms or pain. One day, you are doing a ward round and Lilian insists you and says ‘I am living in lot of pain and suffering, my entire body aches, so much that I just don’t want to live anymore. I want you to do something that would end my life today.
What do you do as a doctor in that situation?
You know this patient very well and you can see that they are suffering a lot, their symptoms cannot be managed and they are desperate to end their life to release them of their suffering.
