In the United States, religious freedom is curtailed when it interferes with the collection of taxes. According to the War Resisters League, 49 percent of our federal taxes go to military spending.26 Pacifists and conscientious objectors are compelled, despite their objections, to pay taxes to support the military. If pacifists refuse to pay their federal income taxes, their salary can be garnished and their property seized. Discuss how Locke, Marx, and Mill might each respond to this limitation placed on the right to religious freedom and freedom of conscience by our duty to share in the fi nancial burden of our society
