In the United States, housing construction makes heavy use of wood in almost all regions, for framing and for finishing. Yet hardwood forests are seriously depleted and wood produced by tree farms is spongy and prone to warping. Some ecologists are raising alarms about deforestation. A few architects are considering building houses of rammed earth, pumice, or straw bales. Recycled steel studs, made from steel beams of demolished buildings, have been used in commercial buildings and are beginning to be used in residences. Such steel is stronger than wood and is resistant to earthquakes and termites. What are your ideas about the following questions?
What kind of problems do you anticipate will arise from this new approach to domestic architecture?
Should architects emphasize creativity as much as artists in considering alternative building designs and materials?
Should ecological concerns be paramount in the minds of artists, architects, and urban planners?
