In the final paragraph of the previous reading, James says it makes no difference whether we say the facts “create” or “reveal” new truths. What is the significance of blurring this distinction? (Think about the difference between creating a message in the sand and revealing one that is already there but that we didn’t notice previously.) Why would Descartes and Locke (unlike James) insist that the methods of science and philosophy reveal truths but do not create them?
