1. Introduction
Developing of listening skill is one of the most important interpersonal skills, which a person can use, in personal as well as professional life. As stated by Hugo (n.d.), listening is more important than hearing in learning because hearing does not require any understanding of the words said or information spoken, while listening leads to imbibing the information into the brain and understanding it through its processing. Therefore, listening is important in learning any new language. Moreover, from the study mentioned by Hugo (n.d.), it also became clear that children face difficulties in learning new languages because they lack paying sufficient attention to the new words that they hearing or are being written for them to note down. Thus, this essay deals with use of listening as language skills, factors that influence listening skills and their role in facilitating listening in English to the student of Grade three through activity.
2. Listening as a language skill
Listening is a receptive skill, which is also a first language skill developed in humans. It is called receptive because wherever there is sound like music; noise and voice, person near to the sound will receive it. As mentioned by Jones (2017), listening is received and not produced; thus, it is receptive. It has now been proved by scientists that people start listening as babies inside the womb of their mother and even respond to it.
As mentioned by Goh and Vandergrift (2018), learning of language is easy when one has to listen to it for over a time. Listening enables the person to produce words themselves. Listening is the first skill developed in a child while listening to the native language, first language or even many other languages. To acquire the fluency in many languages, it is necessary for person to develop listening skill in that specific language. Listening skills can be developed in the specific language when people pay attention to the sound, tone and pronunciation; it helps to learn the language even more easily and perfectly.
According to Hugo (n.d.), listening is not a passive activity. It requires through participation from the receiver of the message. It is so because through the period when the information is being propagated, the receiver has to invest in their energy and attention to grab the information as well as process it inside their brain and finally evaluate its meaning in order to understand it. Hence, if the person fails to execute this entire process, stepwise, then they would not be able to understand the things said to them, thus, making language learning impossible.
3. Factors that influence the acquisition of listening skills
There are many reasons, which can affect the listening skills of the person. As suggested by Vandergrift (2015), lack of effort in understanding the word while listening to the language. Distraction while listening is another factor that influence in developing listening skills. As mentioned by Masalimova et al. (2016), uncomfortable environment makes it difficult in listening anything with concentration. Noise, room temperature and distractions like using phones, talking with others and in uncomfortable company often makes it more difficult in listening with focus and concentration.
As mentioned by Jones, Bodie and Hughes (2016), active listening is necessary for development of learning skills. It becomes difficult when a person is biased towards one thing and they show resistance in learning to other things. It further increases the difficulty when there is different pronunciation or accents. Listeners’ concentration power and listening stamina are main factors, which has direct influence on listening and then learning from it. Interference of someone while listening creates...
