In Stigma and Social Identity, Goffman discusses various aspects of social stigma: how it affects interactions with non-stigmatized others, how it affects self-perception and self-concept, the ways in which interactions with “normals” are perceived and managed, and so on. Stigma is powerful and insidious: if a personal quality is perceived as stigmatized, it can come to be one of the strongest determinants of identity, and shape social interactions, personal relationships, and even a person’s life chances.
