The paper chosen for analysis and summary in this paper is titled, “Ageism and Age Discrimination in the Family: Applying an Intergenerati
onal Critical Consciousness Approach”. The paper focuses on the various negative stereotypes associated with ageing and how these are expressed, either consciously or unconsciously towards the ageing populations through encounters with law, employment, government, healthcare as well as family. The paper goes on to relate how stereotypes negatively impact the aged and their perception of their own self and their future. The paper also discusses a clinical case example to illustrate these important points.
The US is seeing an increase in the number of aging populations. The outcomes of the older population are therefore important for the present but all the more important for the future. The concept of ageism refers to the systematic stereotyping and discrimination against the old as a result of old age. The author of the paper analyses the negative impact of micro-level healthcare decisions, microaggressions and macro-structural systems in the context of ageism on older people.
