In his book Horace’s Compromise, Sizer (1985) states, “Good teachers and wise students know how to separate performance (you flunked) from person (you’re O.K.). Making a child feel stupid is stupid and cruel, but pretending that 2+ 2=5 in order to massage the student’s ego is cruel, and dishonest in addition” (p. 175). Contrast this proposition with the constructivist viewpoint of no right answers and no wrong answers suggested in this chapter.
