In his book Earth in the Balance, Al Gore argues that modern civilization is dysfunctional because it assumes a radical separation between humans and nature. This dysfunction is manifested in spiritual malaise as well as in our addiction to consuming ever larger quantities of oil, trees, topsoil, and other “substances we rip from the crust of the earth.” 26 However, Gore rejects deep ecology, claiming that it incorrectly portrays humans in the “role of pathogens, a kind of virus giving the earth a rash and a fever, threatening the planet’s vital life functions.” 27 Gore argues instead that we need to seek a balance between our needs and preservation of the global environment. Our proper role is as God’s stewards of the earth. Discuss how Devall and Sessions might respond to Gore.
