In December 2006, the personal identification information of 30,000 North Carolina residents was stolen from the private vehicle of an employee for the North Carolina Department of Revenue. Fortunately, the taxpayers were immediately notified in accordance with a newly minted notification law. This was not the case in Florida, when a laptop computer from the Inspector General’s Office at the Department of Transportation was stolen out of a government vehicle. The computer contained the unencrypted names, social security numbers, birth dates, and addresses of nearly 133,000 Florida residents.
