In an effort to improve national literacy levels (and win votes in the next election), the federal government is offering grants to any schools that can demonstrate a sufficient need for extra funding. As part of a grant application he is preparing on behalf of his primary school, Principal Barrett wants to compare his year 7 students’ performance on the National Standardized Literacy Test with that of their peers from across the country. Last year, the national year 7 average on this test was 84.6.
There were 28 year 7 students at the primary school last year. Their scores on the National Standardized Literacy Test are reproduced in Table 4.1.
