In a study by Baker, Tse, Gerhardstein, and Adler (2008), 6-month-old infants were presented with individual elements, some of which were arranged as either a square or a circle while the other elements were randomly oriented. The results of this study indicated that:
infants perceive the relations between individual elements to form a whole even when those elements are embedded in noise.
infants preferred the circle shape to the square shape.
infants of this age still only perceive individual details and do not relate them into a unified whole.
infants selectively attended to the randomly oriented elements.
