In a roughly 2-3 page paper, double-spaced, 12 times new roman font, write a response to relationships in either Ibsen’s A Doll’s House or Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. Form a thesis that will cover how you feel said relationship (but remember to avoid saying I to make it sound more professional). For example, “Nora’s relationship with Torvald was a sham from the beginning and this is made clear through various moments from the play”. You will then support your thesis by analyzing 3 significant moments from the play and/or motifs/symbols/etc.

RESPONSE PAPER #1: Due 5/17/2021 by 11:59 pm (post on Blackboard) In a roughly 2-3 page paper, double-spaced, 12 times new roman font, write a response to relationships in either Ibsen’s A Doll’s House or Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. You can talk about multiple relationships, but it’s probably best to focus on one to support your thesis. If you decide to write about Kafka’s novella, use the same prompt as above but modify for the characters you choose to focus on. Some potential relationships you can focus on in your paper: Nora/Torvald Christine/Krogstadt Nora/Dr. Rank Nora/her kids The entire Helmer family (Nora, Torvald, kids) OR Gregor’s relationship with his family Gregor’s relationship with his boss If you would like, you could instead write a 2-3 page dialogue between Nora and/or Torvald and Gregor or write an alternate ending or continuation to either story OR Discuss why you think these authors chose depressing topics to write about. What purpose did that serve? OR Choose a topic of your own as long as it relates to one or both stories

Introduction
Ibsen’s ‘A Doll’s House’ is a play that explores the themes of love and marriage and most importantly, focuses on the idea of the presence of love in a marriage. A number of characters are involved in the exploration of this prominent theme, such as Nora and her husband Torvald, the marriage of Krogstad and Mrs. Linde and the secretive love of Mr. Rank for Nora over the years. Apart from these characters, Ibsen explores the theme of relationships in regard to Nora’s relationship with her kids as well as the intricate dynamics of relationship in the Helmer family, among Nora, Torvald and their children. However, this paper aims to respond in a great detail to the relationship between Nora and Torvald.
Marriage and Society
In the play by Ibsen, although the central characters, namely Nora and Torvald are married as a culmination of their mutual love for each other, societal norms play a significant role in their relationship. Both the characters in the play are forced to abide by the societal dictates of roles, that of husband and wife. Despite having a loving relationship in the marriage, Nora is expected to be meek and docile thereby ensuring that she listens to the opinions put forward by her husband Torvald. She also has to accept the fact that as a husband, Torvald will act as the decision maker in the house, and not consider and incorporate the opinions of Nora....
