Introduction and background
In order to ensure that a nurse-led approach is possible through primary care centers for
resolving the problems of obesity, it is essential that nurses in primary health care centers have
adequate knowledge on illness, its ill-effects and methods that can help resolve it. It is highly
recommended that these nurses are trained to be able to answer several queries and spread
awareness on various health issues (Brownlie, D, 1994).
Importance of the IOM "Future of Nursing" report related to the nursing workforce
The IOM is important as it helps identify the future practices that can benefit the
profession of nursing. Primary health care differs from primary care as primary care focuses on
medical aspects of curing an illness and providing medical treatment. It focuses on acute care
and treating of the patient immediately through interventions and usage of medicines. But in case
of primary health care the lifestyle of the patient in order to ensure his welfare. This has become
an important need for the future of the nursing profession (Costa, J. and Teare, R, 2000).
The concept of nursing, can be defined as a branch of humanity where a nurse provides
compassionate care and nurture to healthy and unhealthy people. Hence, it is a process, and both
an art and a science. Nursing is the profession where we use evidence based practices yet gained
deep knowledge about the concept of a human being. In this way it is essential that the
hospitalization and nursing facilities be improved (WHO report, 2003)
