In a civil lawsuit, an inmate testifies that he suffered “minor bruises, facial swelling, loosened teeth, and a cracked dental plate” as a result of a beating by correctional officers. He states that the beating took place while he was handcuffed and shackled following an argument with one of the officers, and that a supervisor watched the beating, but merely told the officers “not to have too much fun.” Use the decision-making guidelines on pages 428–429 to determine how you would rule in this case. Then look up the decision in Hudson v. McMillian (503 U.S. 1, 1992) to see how the Supreme Court actually ruled.
