In 1957, the same year Sputnik launched, the first “personal computer” was already developed at the Watson Labs at Columbia University in collaboration with IBM. The IBM 610 Autopoint Computer was clunky, big, and very slow. Nevertheless, it demonstrated a potential future of personal computers for the masses (IBM 610, 1957).
