Importance to nursing.  Select a mid-range theory from the nursing or other disciplinary literature that addresses a phenomenon of interest to nursing.  The theory should be sufficiently developed such that you can identify a body of theoretical and research papers to conduct your analysis.  Using guidelines, either those proposed by Chinn & Kramer (2008) or another specified set of criteria, as a guide, prepare a brief summary of key elements of the theory (i.e., purposes, concepts, relationships, assumptions) and identify changes that have occurred over time.  Conduct a brief, critical review of research that has been informed by the theory.  Analyze the theory for clarity, simplicity, generality, accessibility, and importance, identifying strengths and weaknesses.  Consider the implications of your analysis for theory refinement, research and practice, drawing on appropriate literature to justify your claims as needed.






OPTION B: Analysis of a Pattern of Knowing

The purpose of this assignment is to conduct an in-depth analysis of a pattern of knowing as proposed by Chinn and Kramer (2011). Select one of the patterns of knowing and describe its philosophical underpinnings. The pattern of knowing should be sufficiently developed such that you can identify a body of theoretical and research papers to conduct your analysis. Within your analysis, consider the strengths and limitations of the varied arguments, including the actual or potential impact on nursing science. Describe how you would apply the pattern of knowing to clinical practice. Consider the implications of your analysis for refinement of the pattern of knowing, research and practice, drawing on appropriate literature to justify your claims as needed.
