Immanuel Kant argued in his essay “An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment?” (1784) that: “the guardians who have so benevolently taken over the supervision of men have carefully seen to it that the far greatest part of them…regard taking the step to maturity as very dangerous, not to mention difficult.” Although Kant held that education could be a great assistance in the process of enlightenment, he also recognized that some forms of education kept many under the supervision of guardians . Discuss how educated guardians have either hindered or promoted the development of independent thinking, comparing Kant’s arguments to one of the following: the scholastics; Fontenelle’s Marquise; or the closing scenes of Frankenstein.
