Imagine that you live in a world in which the only available means for telling the time of day are sundials and large pendulum clocks. Given the following requirements specification, suggest how you might begin exploring the ways of meeting it by creating a suitable design solution: The need is for a portable timepiece, to be carried in a pocket, or even (if possible) worn on one’s wrist. It will have a circular dial, divided into twelve equal-sized portions, numbered 1 to 12. Two pointers will be fixed to a spindle in the centre of the dial: one (the longer one) will rotate once per hour, while the second (shorter) pointer will rotate once every 12 hours. The device should be capable of running unattended for at least 24 hours and should not need to be kept in a fixed position in order to work correctly. This problem is a good demonstration of why the simplistic approach sometimes advocated in favour of stepwise refinement of a formal requirements specification as a means of producing a design is unrealistic and impractical for most real systems.
