The assignment is to be submitted via Turnitin using the link that will be provided online. A link will be also provided for the Excel file submission. However, the Excel file is only supporting material. All relevant tables, graphs and diagrams should be included in the Word document. 2. The assignment report has to be submitted together with a group-work report. A template of the group-work report will be provided on LMS. 3. The group-work report will contain the following information: a. The agreement on the task allocation for each group member, e.g., student A is in charge of Task 1 and Task 2 (where each task is clearly described). b. The total actual contribution of each student on his/her allocated tasks, e.g., student A’s contribution is X% (this shows the total accomplishment of student A on each task). c. The signatures of ALL group members. 4. The mark of each student will be based on the performance of the whole group and his/her individual contribution. 5. Late submissions will be penalised with a deduction of 2 points for each day of late submission. Structure of the report 1. Each report should be submitted in Word format, respecting the word count (no more than 1,500 words excluding tables, figures and references), and using Times New Roman font, in size 12 with single line space. The report in Word format should include all required tables and figures, while all computations should be conducted and clearly reported in Excel files. 2. The report should include the following general sections (subsections with their respective titles and subtitles can be added) a. A table of contents b. A table of figures (graphs, diagrams, etc.) and tables c. A title that must be of the following format: “(name of your country)’s International Trade Profile: A Historical Perspective” d. A brief introduction e. The body of the report (with titles and subtitles of your choice) f. A brief conclusion g. A list of your references (at least five) General Contents of the Report In the report you will describe the trade profile of a country of your choice, analysing its evolution over time. The main objectives of the report are: 1. To learn how to utilise various indicators that are normally used to describe the patterns of trade integration of a country in the global economy. 2. To effectively manage trade datasets to conduct quantitative analysis. 3. To analyse the trade profile of a country and its evolution using the theories studied during the semester. Data Sources · Trade data: To download the trade data go to http://wits.worldbank.org/WITS/WITS//Default-A.aspx?Page=Default (you will need to create an account). · For detailed instructions on how to download the data please see the file “Data Downloading Guidelines”. Make sure that the country of your choice has trade data available that starts at least in the 1960’s. · Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data in current US$ can be downloaded from: https://data.worldbank.org/ Specific Contents of the Report Task 1. (3 marks) Describe the evolution of the volume of exports and imports. For this task you will need data aggregated over all products and all partners for the whole period available. a. Generate a table with the time series of the country’s total exports and imports including the annual percentage change and the trade balance for every year. b. Add to the table the aggregate world exports for each year, as well as the annual percentage change. c. Compute and include in the table your country’s export share in world exports for each year, as well as the annual percentage change in the share. d. Generate a line diagram for your country’s exports share over time. Briefly discuss your findings. Task 2. (3 marks) Analyse the degree of integration of your country to the world economy. In this point, in addition to the data downloaded in Task 1 you will need to download GDP at current US$. a. Generate a table and a line diagram where you show the evolution of your country’s openness to trade for the whole period of available data. Also include in your table the annual change over time. Trade openness is computed using the following formula: b. Briefly discuss your findings. Make sure that your analysis includes references to specific political or economic events that may relate to the evolution of the openness to trade in your country. Support your analysis by research on relevant literature when appropriate. Task 3. (7 marks) Analyse the pattern of exports specialisation. For this task you will need to download your country’s exports data disaggregated by industries (SITC 3-digit level). Download the data for the earliest year available, one year around the middle of your time series (possibly end of the 1980’s or beginning of the 1990’s), and for the most recent year in your dataset (if you find some missing observations that is ok, as long as there is enough data to conduct the analysis just work with what you have). a. In your Excel spread sheet(s) calculate the index of Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) for the manufacturing industries at the SITC 3-digit level using the relevant data. Please keep RCA values to 3 decimal places. Note that the data downloaded may include manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries. The manufacturing industries are those with coding between 5 and 8. The RCA of an industry of country in year is given by: , where is the export value of industry of country at year . The denominator incorporates aggregated world values (all countries). b. Generate 3 tables where you list the top 10 industries by comparative advantage in each of the selected years (one table per year). Each table should include the rank, industry ID, industry name and the corresponding RCA. Note: The index represents the share of a particular industry in the total exports of a country, relative to the share of that industry in world trade. A country is said to have a revealed comparative advantage in an industry when the corresponding index is greater than 1 (). c. Briefly discuss your findings analysing the patterns and trends of comparative advantage. What do you think are the sources of the revealed comparative advantage and its change over time (in case a change is observed)? Your discussion should be supported not only by the data analysis but also by research on relevant literature and the theories studied in the subject. Task 4.
