If wheat straw is used as feedstock for biobutanol production, how many pounds of feedstock are needed to make one gallon of biobutanol? You can assume that wheat straw is composed (by weight) of 75% cellulose and hemicellulose, 20% lignin, and 5% ash. Assume that cellulose and hemicellulose are 100% recoverable and will be hydrolyzed to sugars, of which 40% is fermentable to produce acetone, ethanol, and butanol in a ratio of 3:1:6 in weight percentage. 60% of the sugars goes to carbon dioxide during the fermentation. Use the chemical composition of cellulose and hemicellulose you can find in the literature and follow the stoichiometric relationship to obtain your results.
