Identify and select a very basic environmental health problem that you consider requires solvingPropose a solution to solve the problem. Write this document as if you are proposing the solution to a management body in government – e.g. a local council, or to cooperate management i.e. hospital or mining company management. The problem: Introduce your case – what is the problem and why does it need solving? Within the context of your case then discuss: o The specific environment (you may use what you have presented in the earlier Essays) o The environmental health hazard or hazards if you wish to discuss more than one (but do keep this simple and specific!!). Reminder – hazards can be described as risk factors. These can be infectious disease agents / chemical contaminants / physical conditions/. They will have sources / released from source > environment / carriers etc; o Only ONE disease that your selected hazard is likely to cause - including the necessary conditions for the disease to develop from the exposure; o At least one relevant exposure pathway; o The risk posed to the exposed population (NB you need not apply the EHIA process unless you feel up to it – basic understanding and application of risk assessment is sufficient); o The importance of your selected disease in the context of disease burden (why you think this disease need particular attention e.g. what would be consequences for society?); Solving: Discuss how you would intervene to reduce the risk of the exposed population contracting the disease – the following MUST be included in your discussion: o A cause-and-effect structure e.g. the DPSEEA framework or something similar. o Demonstrate to us clearly where in the framework you would focus your intervention. o Also show us whether where your solution is at a primary level? Or perhaps primary and / or secondary and / or tertiary intervention – or perhaps all three? We mark your presentation according to the evaluation framework shown on next page
