Students are required to complete ALL summative assessments listed below in order to be deemed “Competent” in this unit of competency Assessment Methods Written Questions Assessment 1 Case Study Assessment 2 Questions Assessment 3 Issue Date March 2018 Version 1.2.1 a Page 2 of 10 Assessment Resource ICTICT511 Unit Summary The unit objectives, prerequisites, co-requisites and other pertinent information about this unit is described at https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/ICTICT511 a Page 3 of 10 Assessment Resource ICTICT511 General Instructions for Students As these are considered practical units to be conducted in a simulated environment, this may include a closed meeting room, office, or even the classroom (if it represents a working office environment). You trainer will act as an office supervisor and will provide all relevant information for an assessment. • Answer all parts of the assessment • Type your answers (do not submit handwritten assessments) • Answer in your own words (do not copy slabs of text from sources) • Do not cheat. Anyone caught cheating will automatically be marked Not Satisfactory for this unit. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule. In order to achieve competency, all assessment tasks must be completed to a Satisfactory standard Note: All references made to workplace and or employer, are directly related to the trainers and facilities at VIT. a Page 4 of 10 Assessment Resource ICTICT511 Assessment 1: Written Assessment Student Name: ______________________________________________________________ Student ID No: ______________________________________________________________ Student Instructions: • Your answers should be on a separate document using word processing software such as MS Word & or other software (hand written submissions are only acceptable with prior approval from your Trainer) • Your document should be professionally formatted and include o Your Name o Your Student ID o Unit Code o Assessment Number (i.e. ICTICT511 Assessment 1) • Please reference to each question number and retype each question with your answers • This is an open book assessment, you must answer every question and provide enough information to demonstrate sufficient understanding of what has been asked to achieve competency. Please ask your Trainer/Assessor if you are unsure what is sufficient detail for an answer • Ask your trainer/assessor if you do not understand a question. Whist your trainer/assessor cannot tell you the answer, he/she may be able to re-word the question for you or provide further assistance based on the Institute’s “Reasonable Adjustment Policy” • Answers should be your own work, in your own words and not plagiarised, nor copied. However, if an answer is cut & pasted (such as a definition), then the source should be referenced a Page 5 of 10 Assessment Resource ICTICT511 Instructions to Students Read the questions below and provide written answers (not longer than 300 words for each answer) for each question. Type, do not handwrite, your answers. 1. identify and describe how methods of analysis and planning approaches, such as cost-benefit analysis, and SWOT analysis, can be applied to technical problems and management requirements 2. You are a network administrator in a company ABC. You have found out that the company is running very old hardware, and is running an unsupported version of Windows (Windows Me) on those computers. What would you advise them about the security implications of running an unsupported version of Windows on their network? 3. You are a network administrator in company ABC. You are monitoring the disk spaced used of the company servers. You find the total capacity available is 10TB, of which 8TB is currently in use. Furthermore, you find that monthly space usage is increasing by 300GB on average. What would you advise them about when they should upgrade their disk capacity and why? 4. You are a network administrator in company ABC. The company has asked you to investigate what operating systems are in use by the organisation, so they can forecast their future licensing costs. What tool(s) could you use to gather information about what operating systems are in use? 5. When using an analysis technique like SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) Analysis, which factors apply (i) to the external environment; and (ii) the internal environment of the company? Why do we need to look at both the external and internal environments when doing strategic planning? 6. When attempting to identify technology and product directions for evaluating and forecasting vendor and technology trends in IT, what are two factors that can influence the direction of technological evolution? 7. You are a network administrator for Great Games (GG), a games company that runs its game servers in the Google Cloud Platform. Currently GG runs a pool of 6 N1-Standard machines running Windows 2012 in GCP, each of which is priced at $70 per month. GG budget is for each 50 users per server, and as each user pays $5 per month to play, this gives GG a healthy margin on their infrastructure costs i.e. 50 x 5 = $250 of income per server, giving GG a margin of $180 per server per month. (Assume there are 300 users in total) a Page 6 of 10 Assessment Resource ICTICT511 GG knows from past experience that once games server CPU utilisation goes beyond 70% per machine, the performance for games players will be unacceptable. (i) What tool could you use under Windows 2012 to monitor CPU usage across all the six games servers? (ii) Having monitored CPU usage across all six servers, and found it to be on average 85%. How many N1 servers do you have to add to the pool to get utilisation down to below 70%, and what will this do to the cost-efficiency (margin) GG has on each of its deployed servers (you can assume that the number of users stays at 300) Assessor Use Only Assessor Comments Satisfactory (S) Not Satisfactory (NS) Assessor Signature: _______________________________ Date: _____________ a Page 7 of 10 Assessment Resource ICTICT511 Assessment 2: Case Study Instructions to Students This assessment task can be undertaken in groups of up to three students per group. You need to list your group members in the introduction to the report. You should use the provided report template to help you structure the report (see Learner Resources for the subject). Each student needs to attach a copy of the group report to their assessment summary when they hand in their tasks Read the scenario below and write a report that addresses the requirements listed at the end of the scenario Scenario: You are the lead network administrator for XIT, a private college based in Australia. XIT has recently decided to venture into the Chinese educational market, whereby Chinese students will be able to enroll in courses that are delivered purely online, and thus will be able to complete the courses without ever leaving China. XIT has been able to procure some ready-made courses from a content provider, and your task is to design a network infrastructure that will both support the delivery of those courses and fit the current business strategy of XIT. XIT currently has an internal IT staff of 5 people, supporting an internal network of around 200 computers. IT staff are spending a lot of time fixing hardware, and patching operating systems, and the CEO is keen to reduce some of these costs. The inhouse IT manager has advised the CEO that, to support the proposed China business, the number of IT staff would have to be increased by three people and the number of extra servers needed would be ten, based on an expected demand of 500 students initially (i.e. 50 students per server). The cost of this extra hardware and software has been estimated by the IT Manager at $125,000 with the three extra staff also costing $75,000 per person. The CEO of XIT is unsure as to whether XIT should invest a lot of money up front in expensive network infrastructure, as the demand for courses from China is hard to predict. The CEO does not want to invest in a lot of network infrastructure if the demand for the courses does not eventuate, so he is interested in minimising his up-front investment costs. The CEO wants a solution that will support 100 students initially, but is also a flexible solution that will ‘scale up’ as needed e.g. if many more Chinese students enrol than expected, he wants to make sure he has a network infrastructure that can support that. He also wants a solution that will minimise the demands on in-house IT support staff, as he is not keen to add to the payroll unless absolutely necessary. The CEO has asked you to come up with a plan for a cloud-based network infrastructure, that does not involve a lot of upfront expenditure, and can ‘scale up’ if required, should the demand for courses suddenly increase. He has heard about cloud computing, and a Google Cloud Platform (GCP) salesman has convinced him that GCP is the cloud provider he should be using. The salesman has also had a GCP technical architect prepare an initial design for the CEO about what GCP resources would be needed to support an initial cloud deployment (to support 100 students). The learning management system (LMS) that is being used by XIT has a
